The Christmas season is usually a time when retailers expect a spike in sales. With the bonuses companies usually give out, its the time of the year when people can afford to spend a little more than usual. How did things go in the console market? Here’s a clue: it’s not going to surprise you.

Today, via stats from the NPD Group, we know: In the US, Microsoft outsold the PS3 by (just shy of) 2-to-1, selling 1.44 million consoles to Sony’s 726,000.

So it’s another nail in the coffin for the PS3. Not even Metal Gear Solid 4 managed to lift its dismal sales. Even for non-gamers, the Xbox 360 presents a logical choice. Its larger games library and higher number of exclusive titles both give players more options, making it a better gift than the other. Sony needs to take a serious look at what it plans to do with its console because the “nail in the coffin” metaphor is going out fast. The PS3 is likely to be halfway through six inches below ground already, if you know what I mean.
