Worst Technology Trends of 2007

ExtremeTech has a list of the worst tech trends of 2007. What tops the list? Gaming, but not in the way you’d expect. Excerpts:

Gaming as the Universal Boogieman

I’m talking about the universal boogieman, the nasty influence that causes kids to do terrible things. Nowadays, you can bet that every time someone picks up a gun and kills anyone else, the media (and dorks like Jack Thompson, Hillary Clinton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and other knee-jerk politicos) immediately looks for a video game connection. Sometimes they even make one where one does not actually exist.

As a gamer myself, I find it insulting that some people blame games for violent behavior. I play violent games everyday. I like inflicting brutal punishment using a controller. Do I do it in real life? Of course not. I know better. That’s where the insult comes in. It’s like placing gamers in a tidy little box and then sticking a “Violent” label on it. I miss the days when gamers were synonymous with “geeks” instead of “gun-wielding sociopaths”.

Here’s to hoping that we have a better year in 2008.
