Woman Falls For Nigerian Scam, Gives $400,000
Technology is bringing us closer to each other. Chat, email, VoIP are all making communication cheaper, faster and easier to access. The downside is that it also allows people we don’t know to contact us, making us susceptible to spam, scams and other traps online. A recent article reports that a woman lost $400,000 USD to one of the oldest tricks on the Web: the Nigerian scam.
She wiped out her husband’s retirement account, mortgaged the house and took a lien out on the family car. Both were already paid for.
For more than two years, Spears sent tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars. Everyone she knew, including law enforcement officials, her family and bank officials, told her to stop, that it was all a scam. She persisted.
So watch out, folks. I read somewhere that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Exercise caution and common sense, especially when we’re out online. You never know what the next scam will be.
