Windows XP Service Pack 3 Updates
As previously reported, April 29 is indeed the release date of Windows XP Service Pack 3. CNet has a hands-on report about the installation process and thankfully, it’s not a nightmare compared to the all-night download of Service Pack 2. Here’s a list of some of the improvements:
- Support for WPA2, the latest standards-based wireless security solution derived from the IEEE 802.11i standard.
- Improvements to black-hole router detection (detecting routers that are silently discarding packets). Windows XP SP3 turns this protection on by default.
- Peer Name Resolution Protocol (PNRP), which allows Windows XP applications to communicate with Windows Vista programs that use PNRP.
- Windows Installer 3.1, which contains new and enhanced functionality and addresses some issues that Microsoft found in Windows Installer 3.0.
Similar to SP2, the updates on SP3 are focused on security. Recognizing that some of the new stuff might be a bit too technical for average users, Microsoft is adjusting the descriptions on the Security Options control panel. From experience, the old stuff was a bit too technical when it was first introduced, so hopefully the new descriptions will prove useful.
