The Amazon Kindle is currently the most popular e-reader out there, so it’s no surprise that a lot of people were anticipating the next version. Now that the Kindle 2 is here, it’s time to take a close look at it and see what’s inside the little wonder.

  • The Kindle 2 sports a 532 MHz processor, clocking in faster than an iPhone 3G. Amazon used a 90nm ARM11-based Freescale MCIMX31L multimedia processor.
  • The Kindle 2 is thinner than the iPhone 3G, but a hair thicker than an iPod Touch.

The most noteworthy thing about it other than the size is the text-to-speech feature, which is a tricky feature to implement. Ask anyone who’s tried to use the default text-to-speech reader for Windows. However, Amazon pulled it off. The Kindle 2′s vocal reader is said to be clear and pleasant to the ear, a feature that will prove invaluable to people who prefer audio books. Plus, it’s a nice option to turn to when your eyes get tired from all that text.
