USB 3.0 Spec Is Done
It’s been more than a year since I last wrote about USB 3.0. More than a year, folks. Even I can’t believe it’s been that long. If you’ve been waiting for news regarding the next version, you’ll be glad to know that it’s done. Don’t expect to see it anytime soon though. It’s going to take a while.
The USB 3.0 Promoter Group announced today that the USB 3.0 specification has been finalized, some 14 months (almost to the day) after Intel first demonstrated a prototype USB 3.0 device. The new standard isn’t expected to start headlining on motherboards until the latter half of 2009 (at the earliest), with compliant devices hopefully appearing sometime in 2010.
2010 isn’t that far off considering it’s already November. It’s going to be worth the wait though. The transfer rate is 4.8Gbps, compared to 2.0′s 480Mbps. The only thing to dislike is its name: Super Speed USB 3.0. Yeah, I know. Dislike is too gentle a word, isn’t it?
