UMPCs: Fail Or Win?

CW finally has an article that attempts to answer the question that I’ve asked myself ever since I saw them: are UMPCs here to stay? Prior to their arrival, laptops were the only option to portable computing. Their presence certainly changed that, but are we looking at a long-term solution here or is it all just a fad that’s doomed to fade?

In other words, whether or not the current generation of ultraportable laptops is a success, we’re just seeing the beginning of the move to smaller, more connective devices that will come even closer to the road warrior’s Holy Grail.

The article is giving me the impression that, while we may not be able to determine the success or failure of UMPCs now, they managed to open avenues for portable computing. That’s always a good thing. Maybe we’ll see even more innovations as a result of UMPCs in the future.
