Toshiba Chops Recharging Time Down To Ten

Rechargeable batteries are a staple part of any modern portable electronic device. It’s definitely hard to imagine how a digital lifestyle would be like without them, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement. Toshiba is bent on working on that by creating batteries that take only minutes to recharge. Here’s the scoop:

Toshiba showed off a prototype of its new Super Charge Ion Batteries, or SCiB, at the Ceatec exhibition in Chiba, Japan. Toshiba promises that the battery, despite its short charge duration, will last longer than current lithium-ion batteries and endure 5,000 to 6,000 charge cycles.

To put things in perspective, cellphone batteries last around 300-500 recharge cycles. Aside from better endurance, the SCiB takes only 10 minutes to recharge to 90%! That’s a big drop in terms of time consumed, making it handy for on-the-spot charging. Wait, did I just say that? On-the-spot charging? Who knew that such a concept would even be possible?
