Topps Releases Cards With 3D Animations

Trading cards are hardly things that would qualify as news on a tech blog, but card maker Topps is looking to change that by announcing that it will now be making baseball cards reminiscent of Star Wars. The “special Topps 3D Live” cards will allow collectors to view their heroes in all their 3D glory. How? By placing the card in front of a webcam. Check out the demo:

You’ll see that each card has a little game that you can play. Pitchers will have to hit moving targets while catchers have to, well, catch balls. You’ll notice that the animation isn’t the smoothest in the world, but for something new, it’s not too shabby either. The mini-games are forgettable though, so I doubt that anyone is going to buy the cards for them.
