Sony To Release A New PS2
Sony is going to release a new PS2 model this month in an effort to raise sales for the upcoming holiday season. The new model will be lighter, thanks to the built-in AC adaptor, and will be initially available only in Japan. Excerpts:
It will go on sale in Japan on November 22 for about $140 (16,000 yen), unchanged from the price of the previous model.
Sony appears set to reap larger profit from each PS2 it sells since the game unit said it had managed to reduce manufacturing costs for the latest PS2 model from those for the previous model.
The Tokyo-based electronics and entertainment conglomerate currently loses money for each PS3 it sells.
Unless Sony does something else in the next few weeks, this is like waving a white flag for the Christmas season. It could have chosen to promote the PS3, like creating a holiday bundle that packs the PS3 with an exclusive title. It could have done a lot of other things that involve the PS3. But no, they chose to go with the PS2. From a business standpoint, it’s a good decision to capitalize on the PS2′s strengths, but where does that leave the PS3?
Let’s see what will happen in the coming weeks. For what it’s worth, I hope the PS3 has a better year in 2008.
