Reviews: Modbook Tablet

Gadget Lab has a review of the Mac tablet Modbook. This mobile computer will let you work anywhere as long as you can carry it. You can mount it up against a wall when your arm wears out or play around with its built-in GPS when you feel like simulating travel. Here’s the verdict:

WIRED Built-in Global Positioning System (GPS). Badass handwriting recognition software accurately renders chicken scratch into coherent words. Durable screen and shell makes porting this pricey device a relatively worry-free ordeal.

TIRED Did we mention this is a pricey ($2,290) device? Stylus pen occasionally looses connectivity or freezes and requires reset. Heavy; weighs as much as a 15-inch Macbook Pro (5.5 lbs).

A major complaint is the mundane hardware involved: Intel’s GMA X3100 with only 144MB of SDRAM. Not exactly cutting-edge technology for a device that’s gunning for artists and designers. Graphics applications are pretty intense, just a tad below what modern games demand, so equipping the Modbook with more video processing muscle would’ve been a good idea. It’s the only flaw that the review found in the device, so if you’re looking to buy a Mac tablet, the Modbook is still up for serious consideration.
