Review: Microsoft Sidewinder X5 Mouse

Looking for a gaming mouse? ZDNet has a review of the Microsoft Sidewinder X5, which is a simpler version of what we posted nearly a year ago. Now, the first one did very well, proving itself to be worthy of the brand. How does the X5 fare?

The bottom line: Microsoft’s pared-down SideWinder X5 Mouse is supposed to offer PC gamers a lower-cost version of its award-winning higher-end model. Instead, it comes across as flimsy and overly stripped down. Other mice deliver better control for the same price.

This reminds me of Deus Ex 2. As a follow-up to one of the greatest games of all time, the sequel was under a lot of pressure to live up to the hype. A controversial design change that the developers implemented was to streamline the game to make it accessible to more people. In the end, reactions to that move were mixed. That seems to be similar to what happened here. Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to attach the Sidewinder name to it.
