Promote Your Search With Google

Have you used Google lately? Take a quick look at your search results and you’ll notice two buttons next to the links, one says “Promote” and the other says “Remove”. Wondering what they’re for? So did I when I first saw them. A quick search showed me that it first made headlines back in November, which is somewhat embarassing because, for someone who keeps a close eye on Google, I completely missed it.

The buttons are part of a Google experiment. Here’s how it’s described:

This experiment lets you influence your search experience by adding, moving, and removing search results. When you search for the same keywords again, you’ll continue to see those changes. If you later want to revert your changes, you can undo any modifications you’ve made. Note that this is an experimental feature and may be available for only a few weeks.

Promoting your search results will place orange markers to make them easily recognizable. Hitting “Remove” will do exactly what it says: it will remove it for your list altogether. That’s a little harsh, really. You have to be signed in to view your custom search result, so keep that in mind if you intend to use this feature.
