Next Year In Graphics

Speaking of graphics, the end of the year is near and it’s time for predictions. What kind of developments are in store for us in 2009? PC gaming has been condemned to extinction since time immemorial. Will the next year be another nail in the coffin or will it bring a breath of fresh air?
The battle for graphics supremacy will start to shift in 2009 from bragging about the best frame rates and image quality in games to bragging about the best performance in non-game applications that use OpenCL and DX11′s Compute Shaders. At the same time, Nvidia will continue to support and promote CUDA and claim it as a serious benefit of their cards for general consumers.
So if there’s anything that you can expect from 2009 in terms of graphics, it’ll be a shift in performance metrics. Frame rates are still going to be a counter but are predicted to be not as essential as they once were. Also, gaming performance isn’t going to be the only standard that video cards are going to face. This thing about non-game applications is going to be interesting. Are these programs going to be as graphically-intensive as games, maybe more? Hit the source for the details.
