Netbooks At CES
![]()
Recent news reported that netbooks took center stage at CES this year. Although the fledgling industry had a slow and rough start, it really picked up the pace last year with the popularity of the ASUS EEE and the participation of HP and other notable hardware makers.
It’s not all good news though. The report mentions that netbooks are still struggling to define what they are and the answer isn’t clear-cut: are they notebooks running on minimum specs or are they supposed to be armed to the teeth with the latest hardware?
While nearly every major PC makers had a new netbook on display at the four-day show ending on Sunday, no two companies seemed to agree on what the rules are to define this segment of tiny, ultra-portable notebooks.
My earlier coverage of netbooks (back then I was referring to them as UMPCs) was focused on their staying power. Were they devices that were merely fads or were they really going to get a foothold strong enough to create an industry of their own. They did the latter, and if 2008 was an indication, then expect to see even more of the mini PCs this year.
