If you’re reading this from a computer using Windows, then stop reading and get your machine updated. Microsoft has released a bulletin regarding a critical update that fixes a vulnerability in Windows. Sure, that’s what updates are supposed to do, but this one is more serious than usual.

This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in the Server service. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if an affected system received a specially crafted RPC request. On Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability without authentication to run arbitrary code. It is possible that this vulnerability could be used in the crafting of a wormable exploit.

Read the fine print: without authentication. That means no username and password will save your computer or network should the vulnerability be exploited. The update is supposed to be available today, so make sure you keep checking until you get the fix.
