Microsoft SideSight Wants Your Fingers Off The Screen

Touchscreens are everywhere these days, so it might lead you to think that everyone is moving to get all devices ready for input from your fingertips. Microsoft has a different idea. You’ll still be using your digits, but they won’t be touching the screen.

But Microsoft (teaming with HTC hardware, at least in this photograph) has developed a new sort of touchscreen that doesn’t involve touching the screen at all. Instead, IR beams shoot out from the sides of the phone and track your gestures on any surface.

You can then use the device by performing the same gestures that you would make as if you were touching it. Horizontal and vertical movements are supported, as well as rotations. It’s called the Microsoft SideSight. We should see a few devices that have it enabled soon.
