Microsoft Going For Multiple Versions With Windows 7

Microsoft is said to be adopting the multiple version scheme that it followed with Windows Vista and is going to release Windows 7 in several forms. Before you say it hasn’t learend it lesson, there are indications that it has. Windows 7 is going be packaged in Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate. It’s more than I’d be comfortable with, considering how bad things were with Vista, but will users understand the differences?
The latest version of Windows 7 beta, build 7025 (the public beta is build 7000), shows a screen during installation that asks the user which version of the OS he or she would like to install, according to a screenshot from PC Beta.
The public beta is labeled as Windows 7 Ultimate, so participants are getting the full package. Well, the full package so far, if you know what I mean. What’s going to be difficult in the end is for testers to find out that the features they liked so much in the beta may not be in the package they selected. I’ve been reading good comments about the new taskbar, so I hope that’s something that’s carried over to all Windows 7 versions.
