Microsoft Announces Windows Azure
You may or may not have heard about it, but the buzz word for today is “azure”. To most of us, it’s just a fancy way of saying the color blue (although artists will probably kick us in the head for simplifying it like that). Today, Microsoft is going to give it another meaning, the same way it changed the word “windows” forever. Here’s what I mean:
…Microsoft will compete with Amazon.com Inc., IBM Corp. and other rivals in selling information storage space and computing power “in the cloud,” distributed across massive data centers worldwide. The system, Windows Azure, will let companies and hobbyists alike build Web-based programs without having to invest in their own server farms.
So there you have it. I suggest you head over to the Wikipedia page for information regarding cloud computing so you can get an idea what’s going on here and why it’s so significant. Once you’re done reading, you’ll figure out why Azure is an appropriate, if a little unimaginative, name.
