Letting Your Boss Monitor Your Heartbeat

Health care is one of the benefits that people look for when they’re out seeking jobs. The better the coverage, the more enticing the job becomes. But what would it take for employees to think that management has taken a step too far? Perhaps it’s when the higher-ups decide to monitor you closer than you would be comfortable with. Just how close? When you have monitoring equipment attached to your wrist.

Exmocare’s “BT2″ system monitors heart rate, body temperature, and other vitals with Bluetooth devices strapped to the wrist that send regular reports wirelessly for supervisors to peruse, according to Gadget Venue. Although it’s sure to be touted as a safety mechanism in workplaces where employee health might be compromised, it’s about as high on the Orwellian scale as you can get.

Orwellian indeed. It’s going to be a definite lifesaver in worst case scenarios, but otherwise it sounds intrusive. Imagine your boss dropping by your cube because of your elevated heart rate only to find out that it’s caused by something completely non-work related, like an argument at home. Sure, it’s going to affect your production for the day, but it’s still not something that your boss should know about, don’t you think?
