LEGO Releases Design Software

Today’s constructions involve a lot of planning, and thankfully there’s a lot of software out there that will provide you with the tools to map out your design. Whether it’s a building, a vehicle or a machine, you can be certain that there’s always something out there that will make design easier for you.

But what if you want to go back to the basics, right to the point where you probably got your inspiration in the first place? If that point happens to be LEGO, then we’ve got good news for you. The company that made millions out of building blocks has released the LEGO Digital Designer, a program that will allow you to plan and design your constructions ahead of time. It features pieces from three different LEGO themes which are then incorporated into a software environment with standard modeling functions: you can zoom in and out and rotate your construction. In a LEGO twist, you can also view how the pieces connect to each other, blow them up LEGO-style and then watch them reassemble. Should you decide to take things to the next level, the program has a link to the LEGO online store.

There are times when the options are overwhelming, and that’s a good thing. As a planner, you want those options. You want the freedom to do whatever you can think of, and thankfully the software takes itself seriously. Like LEGO, it can appear childlike, but because the degree of complexity varies with each design, even adults will find it challenging.

The LEGO Digital Designer is available for free, for both Windows and Mac.
