Just how far back does Google News search?

Since it’s unveiling a few years back, Google News has provided me a great research tool that I use frequently. After all — why get one take on a story when you can get 30? Until today, however, most of my search results came from the past few months.

Looking for some information on a local cruise line that folded a few years back I decided to click the “All Dates” option in the sidebar. What popped up knocked my socks off: an actual newspaper page from 1919.

Upon further inspection it turns out my timing couldn’t have been more apt. Effective yesterday, September 8th 2008, Google News now indexes scanned newspapers from the past — going back 200 years!

So the next time you want to know what those pesky Germans were up to, you’ve got a few first hand accounts to peruse.
