Google Launches Own Wiki, Calls It Knol

Whenever Google makes a move, the world stops and takes notice. Well, at least the IT world does. The latest step in Google’s plans to create a presence in every aspect of the Internet involves wikis, the online reference portals that have been available to everyone. It’s not going to follow the naming convention though, opting to use a different moniker to go by: Knol.

Google today flipped the switch on Knol, a new service where users can share knowledge in a wiki format, but with a twist that emphasizes accountability and control over an article’s content.

Knol encourages experts on a topic, no matter how broad or slim their knowledge, to draft a “knol” and put their real name behind it.

Aside from the real-name use, original writers of a knol can approve changes from other users or prevent them from being edited at all. It’s kind of a trade-off: by placing your name and reputation on the article, you get control over it. Sounds like an interesting concept. Make sure you head over to the source for more information. You can also visit Google Knol yourself.
