Google Labs Adds Tasks To Gmail

Google has added a new feature to Gmail to keep you posted on things you need to do. It’s called “Tasks”, which is the same word that Outlook uses for exactly the same feature, so there’s no hiding who or what Google is gunning for here. As the name implies, it’s basically a reminder tool, so you can use it to make notes then set a time and date for it.

An interesting feature is that you can take email and convert it to a task, so if you’ve got something important in your inbox, there’s no need to create a separate reminder for it; the mail itself becomes the reminder and it’s only a keyboard shortcut away. After giving it a brief run myself, I found out that it already supports Gmail’s skins (at least for the Ninja theme) so it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb even though it’s a new feature.

I’ve only seen one downside so far: no alarms. You can set a date for your task, but I didn’t see a clock anywhere that I can use as an alarm. That’s a feature that Outlook already has, so I’m not sure if I’m simply missing something or maybe it’s a feature meant for future releases. If you have a Gmail account, you can give it a whirl here. Make sure you’re signed on already before you click the link.
