Google Introduces Voice & Video Chat On Gmail
Gmail has had chat enabled for quite some time now. Do you use it? On a regular basis, I don’t, but I have used it. Back then, it served its purpose, so my limited experience with it told me it was okay. Having a chat program built into your mail is a pretty nifty thing, provided you have enough friends logged on to actually chat with.
Google has announced that it has now built video and voice chat into Gmail. Reading chat is great, but it’s even better if you can see and hear the person on the other end of the line.
All you have to do is download and install the voice and video plugin and we take care of the rest. And in the spirit of open communications, we designed this feature using Internet standards such as XMPP, RTP, and H.264, which means that third-party applications and networks can choose to interoperate with Gmail voice and video chat.
So if you’re a regular Gmail chat user, give it a whirl. Who knows? Maybe this is exactly what Google needs to get more people into using its chat program.
