Google Cooking Up An Online Storage Service?

If you’ve got a Gmail account, chances are you’re not only using it purely for what it was intended for (which is email, if I have to spell it out). There’s chat, links to other Google services and the like. Its large storage capacity also makes it perfect as an online hard drive, if you can fit your files as attachments. It looks like Google wants to take that convenience and turn it into an actual service.

But now there’s fresh signs Google may be making online storage a more formal product: Google-watcher Alex Chitu notes there’s new programming changes to Google Apps that strongly hint a Google webdrive is coming soon.

The upload and download components that are certain to accompany this product will have to be good in order to make this a success. In comparison, Picasa’s uploading is pretty convenient. Perhaps development should take a page out of that? And seriously? Why did this take so long?
