Google Axes Several Projects
Google’s HR department wasn’t the only thing the company downsized. It has axed several projects that have been stuck in limbo for a while. Here are some of what you won’t see in the list of works in progress anymore.
Jaiku is currently being ported to Google App Engine, and will be released as an open source project on Google Code. However, while there will be no further development from Google, it will continue to stay online.
Dodgeball, which allows users to share their current locations using SMS messages, will be discontinued entirely though Google has yet to establish a timeframe more specific than “a couple of months”.
The Mashup Editor, Google Notebook, Catalog Search and Google Video are the others that won’t be seeing development anymore. I used to be user of Notebook, but Docs replaced that so it became a little redundant, which is big understatement in the case of Google Video and YouTube. The search engine giant is certainly feeling the crunch. I wonder what else will get removed.
