Google Adds Locations To Gmail Signatures

Maybe it got the idea from Latitude, but those folks at Gmail Labs have revealed a feature that will add your location to any email that you send. While IT administrators and geeks will argue that you can always look at email headers and do some magic with IP addresses to get that information, having them appended automatically to signatures is a simpler way to find that out.

So in my 20% time, I wrote an experimental Gmail Labs feature that detects your location and appends the city region and country names to your signature. To try it, turn on Location in Signature from the Labs tab under Settings, then go to your signature preferences and check the box next to “Append your location to the signature.”

Predictably, it uses your public IP address to get your location, so there are certain situations where it may not be accurate. If your browser supports the location module of Gears, it can use wi-fi hotspots to map you out instead.
