Gmail Adds TIFF & PPT Viewing

Google announced this week that users can now view TIFF and PPT files directly through Gmail, removing the need to save local copies of the file and install the software required to open them.

This viewer provides a richer set of features than the old “View as slideshow” version: you can zoom in and out, select text to copy and paste, and “print” the presentation to a PDF document. And, unlike the old version, we no longer require you to have a Flash plugin installed on your browser.

There was a time when this feature would’ve been very popular, back in the day when PowerPoint presentations were part of the usual spam one would receive via email. Most of the ones I received were from friends who wanted to share a joke or two. Still, if your inbox is the sort that receives a lot of images and documents that follow these formats, then this is definitely going to speed up your production time. That sounds pretty convenient, don’t you think?
