Gaming Laptops Reviewed & Compared

Gaming Laptop = Expensive. The hardware demands of gaming are already high when you buy components for a desktop, so it’s easy to imagine just how painful budget-wise it would be to get a laptop specced for it. To help you make that decision this holiday season is this Laptop Gaming Smackdown from ExtremeTech, pitting the ASUS G1S, Alienware Area-51 m9750 and Falcon-Northwest FragBook TLS against each other. I won’t spoil the results for you, but they were nice enough to give us a few tips on what to look for in a gaming laptop:

  • Warranty. Most notebooks come with one year, and up to three to five years are normally available for an added price. It’s always a good idea to get the best warranty you can afford. Unlike desktop computers, laptop PCs’ parts cannot be swapped out if something fails.
  • Power. Look for the best, fastest, and most powerful CPU that you can afford. Then, look for the best, fastest, and most powerful GPU that you can afford. Combine the two for sheer, nutty guts.
  • Price. Set a budget and stick to it. Get the most you can for your money. Shop around and look for deals on various components. It’s easy to go overboard, to click for just one more feature or upgrade—but don’t.
