Emotiv Systems Demos Thought-Powered Input Device
Peripherals that use your brain for input aren’t new, but it’s not surprising that we’ve yet to see one that actually works. A device by Emotiv Systems is looking to change all with a work-in-progress headset that it hopes to launch soon.
The system works in a way that’s similar to speech recognition software. You have to train it to read and interpret the muscles in your face. It’s capable of going through cognitive training, something that “isolates a single strong thought and then uses that for feedback.”
In this case, when I conjure the letter “a” in my head, the box disappears. Any clear thought will work, and you can train as many as you can remember. For instance, we can train for the letter “b,” causing that thought to make the box rotate in a direction.
The process is a bit tedious, but when it’s all dialed correctly, the system works. It’s really capable of acting on what you’re thinking. Emotiv hopes to sell the product this year at the cost of $300 USD. Hopefully we’ll have a list of compatible games by then.
