Dissecting MacBook Pros

If you’ve ever wondered what’s inside one of the those wonderfully thin MacBook Pros, then wonder no more. Someone just tore it down and displayed its guts and gears for the world to see. Okay, so it doesn’t really have guts and gears, but you get the drift.

Looking at the two motherboards side by side, the only discernible difference is the additional video RAM chips. Looking closer at the processor, though, you can see that the 45nm Penryn processor is smaller than the 65nm Merom. With virtually identical chip-sets as the previous model, these notebooks are still considered Santa Rosa platform. The Montevina platform, scheduled for release by Intel later this year, is planned to include support for WiMax mobile networking as well as native support for HD-DVD and Blu-ray decoding in addition to other optimizations.

With so many similarities, it all boils down to the design, and ever since the first generation iPod, Apple has been on a roll. I’m already waiting for the sales figures for the Air and the Pro because it’ll be interesting to find out if the hype paid off.
