Change Your Lighting – Change Your Mood

mood_light.jpgThere is a growing body of literature and studies that continue to show that light can affect our mood, and our health especially for those who may have some form of seasonal affective disorder. As more data becomes known about the correlation between light in our environment and our mood, it should come as no surprise that the number of products out in the marketplace both designer and otherwise to address this growing demand continues to rise.

I’ve wasted plenty of time window-shopping at Generate before and on my most recent visit, these wall-mounted glow pieces by designer Rob Zinn really caught my eye. They come in a variety of interesting shapes and moods. The moods vary according to minor, major, cool and warm. The shapes are all quite unique – Futura, Viscosity, Expansion and Ahora each come in small and large sized options. The one pictured above is the Futura model in ‘Warm’. These mood enhancing lights retail for $249 USD and ground shipping to Canada is free!

It should be noted that ‘seasonal affective disorder’ is actually quite different from simply wanting some mood lighting or ambient lighting. It’s been estimated that upwards of 500,000 in the U.S. alone suffer from some kind of SAD, and aside from taking a winter vacation to a sunny destination, it will take much more than ‘mood lighting’ to help you beat the SAD blues. In fact, you will need a light source that can emit about 10-20 times more brightness than your garden-variety indoor light. Here are some links to companies that offer products specifically catered to those who are afflicted by Seasonal Affective Disorder:
