Cable Modem with Battery Backup

motobatterymodem.jpgIf you have taken the plunge and are using voice over IP as your only landline telephone service, you might have noticed that when the power goes out, you lose the ability to phone people.

Some have taken iniative and hooked up a UPS, but it can’t provide you a long term solution for extended blackouts.

Motorola is now filling what they see as a void by offering a new modem, the SBV5220, that includes its own lithium-ion battery backup, which can provide up to 8 hours of power.

Currently, it is only being bundled with Comcast in the United States, but I don’t doubt that you will see it in Canada soon, as Rogers and other VoIP service providers look to try to reduce fears and transition problems for home users in Canada.
