BlueTrack: A Step Forward In Optical Mice
We’ve featured the Sidewinder X8 before, but apparently there was something under the hood that we forgot to mention when we posted it. It’s called BlueTrack, which is new technology that works differently from the one that’s used by standard optical mice. You can read the hands-on here. How does it work?
The general idea behind BlueTrack is pretty straightforward: instead of using a coherent light beam (i.e. a laser) as a light source, BlueTrack uses incoherent blue light. Becaues the light is incoherent, it diffuses better across a variety of surfaces, which makes it easier for the mouse’s embedded optical sensor to pick up an image.
Okay, so now we know just how different it is, but is it better? Microsoft claims it is, but no one has been able to verify (or debunk) the claim yet. If you have the know-how to do so, give it a shot and see if all this incoherence is the future of optical mouse technology.
