Airline Passenger Delayed Because Of MacBook Air
It’s rare to find two different sources that converge on one topic on the same day, but that’s what we’re looking at right now. First, a traveler experienced a slight delay in his usual routine when his laptop was seized at the airport. Why? Probably because it looked different. After all, it was a MacBook Air.
As a security fan, I can tell you that TSOs are trained to look for anomalies. Each TSO X-ray operator sees hundreds of laptops a day and some have been doing this for 6 years. They know what laptops are supposed to look like.
Here is my theory. Along comes the new MacBook Air. The thing is as thin as a potato chip, and looks completely different than any other laptop the TSOs have ever seen. They are seldom seen at TSA checkpoints due to their newness and the fact that they can be hard to find sometimes.
You can read the full narration here from the MacBook Air owner’s perspective. Say what you will about airport security in the U.S., but at least they’re thorough. The source article contacted Apple to find out how the MacBook Air would look like under an x-ray, so that would be interesting to see. Apple hasn’t granted the request yet. It’s not a difficult scenario to imagine. Having scanned laptops for years, airport security personnel would definitely have a hard time identifying what the MacBook Air is. It’s a case of something that worked too well than was originally intended.
