Acer Leads The Netbook Race

Wondering how netbooks are faring? In case you’ve been thinking about the numbers behind the devices previously known as UMPCs, think no more. The sales figures are in and surprisingly ASUS isn’t in the lead with the EEE. The big winner is Acer, thanks to the Aspire One.

…Acer sold 2.15 million Netbooks in Q3 for a 38.3 percent share of the Netbook market. Asus moved 1.7 million units for 30.3 percent market share. Not only did Asus have a head start in this horse race, but it also has a much larger stable of Netbooks. It seemingly releases a new Eee PC model every other week, while Acer has but a few versions and colors of its 8.9-inch Aspire One.

Maybe that’s what did it in. Multiple product models can lead to confusion among consumers. It’s pretty basic from a sales standpoint, so if that’s the cause of the low numbers, it’s difficult to imagine how ASUS missed it. Of course, the low figures could be because of different reasons. HP comes in third, with MSI in fourth place. Lenovo is pretty distant. Hit the source for the full list.
